Beyond the Asana: Spring Yoga Philosophy Retreat

Asana is the physical part of any Yoga practice, and the part we are most accustomed to here in America. Asana is truly fundamental and transformative. But, Asana is actually only a sliver of what Yoga fully encompasses. There is a whole philosophical system, history, stories, songs, and background to the fuller tree of Yoga that deserves some space in the modern yogi’s practice – and that is the inspiration for this weekend. If you’ve ever asked yourself “but what is yoga really?” this weekend calls for you!
Join Katie Breen RYT500, for 2 nights and 3 days of Yoga philosophy in Piney Creek, NC, located just under a 3 hours drive outside of Raleigh/Durham. Spend Friday afternoon through Sunday early evening in the beautiful landscape of the Blueridge Mountains, New River, and the Grayson Highlands area of VA – discovering Yoga beyond the asana. As a small group of seekers and friends, we’ll explore topics on:
– a brief history & background of Yoga
– Yoga philosophy & ethics; teachers, thinkers & scribes
– What Yoga means in contemporary America (and by that, what it doesn’t mean)
– Bhakti: the practice of devotion and stories of the gods & goddesses
– How to incorporate the foundations of Yoga both into your home/physical practice AND your life.
Expect about 12 hours of formal lecture and Q&A time to cover these topics in both broad and nuanced ways. Come with an open mind and heart & questions & explorations & experiences!
*Physical asana classes will not be formally held during this weekend, but there will be ample time and communal space for all to do a physical practice together and/or alone if that is desired.
** There will also be ample time for other activities – in group or alone – hiking (wild pony trails!), walking, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, tubing, reading, lounging, community, creative conversations, kirtan, and satsang.

Included in your registration is a week’s share of veggies, herbs, lettuces, and root veggies & fruits from our farm partner, Infinity Hundred Farms. These ingredients can be used throughout the weekend for cooking meals. Attendees will be responsible for bringing & cooking their own meals in the community kitchen.
*a produce list will be sent out the week of the retreat so that attendees can plan according to supplement your produce share, if needed. Coffees, teas, fruits and pastries will be provided for breakfasts.
